Historical background:
The current state flag was officially introduced in 1991 and combines elements from the history of Mecklenburg and Western Pomerania, two formerly independent regions. The Mecklenburg bull symbolizes the Dukes of Mecklenburg , while the red griffin represents the Principality of Pomerania . The Brandenburg eagle recalls Brandenburg's historical influence in Western Pomerania. The color combination is a modern evolution of older flags from both parts of the state.
