Description & Background:

The colors black and gold date back to the medieval Duchy of Swabia and symbolize tradition, strength, and dignity. At the center is the small coat of arms of the state: three black, striding lions on a gold shield – the historical coat of arms of the Hohenstaufen dynasty, one of the most important ruling families of the Middle Ages.

The current state flag was introduced after the founding of Baden-Württemberg in 1952 and has since stood for the unity of the new federal state, which emerged from the historical regions of Baden, Württemberg-Baden and Württemberg-Hohenzollern.
